“Spotto!”

The car game that keeps score

Somebody spots a yellow car and calls it. Spotorama keeps the score, so everyone in the car can get on with hunting the next one.

Where this came from

A drive from Sydney to Orange to see family — about three and a half hours of it. Audrey was seven and Sadie was three, and they were bored a few minutes in.

So we made up a game. Yellow cars, obviously, because that part has never been negotiable. Audrey and Sadie wanted pink cars and purple cars, two points each. I like sports cars more than a grown man probably should, so I added a unicorn — a McLaren, a Lamborghini or a Ferrari — worth a monstrous ten. We argued the whole thing out before anyone had spotted anything.

Not a list in the app — the one that started it.

Nobody mentioned being bored again for the rest of the drive. All four of us spent three and a half hours hunting for the next one.

The part that worked was not the scoring. It was that we built the list together — everybody got a spot they had argued for, and everybody wanted theirs to be the one that turned up. That is why Spotorama lets you change all of it: every list, every point value, every way a game can end. Whatever your family argues out in the first ten minutes will beat anything I could ship.

What I did not expect was the drive after that one.

Nobody asked for an iPad. The girls wanted to know what we were spotting this time.

What it does

Up to seven players

One phone, everyone in the car. Each player gets a colour and a shape, and the shape stays theirs everywhere so you can find yourself at a glance.

Call it or tap it

Say “Spotto!” and the app hears it, or tap the card. Voice is optional and every spoken action can be tapped instead.

Your rules, not ours

Edit any list, change what a spot is worth, invent your own, and choose how a game ends — on time, on points, or when somebody finishes the list.

Teams

Kids against grown-ups, front seat against back. The app can suggest a fair split, or you can pick.

Works with no signal

Built for the middle of nowhere. No account, no server, nothing to sign in to — everything stays on your phone.

Every trip remembered

Past trips are kept with the full scoreboard, so you can settle who actually won the drive to the coast in April.

On the phone
The Spotorama game screen: a scoreboard of players above a grid of spot cards.
The game screen — everybody’s score, and everything you can spot.
A trip in progress with players divided into two teams.
Teams, when it is kids against grown-ups.
The history screen, showing past trips with their final scores.
Every trip you have played, kept.
Four lists to start with

Twenty-four spots across four road trips. Change any of them, or start from nothing.
